This October marks the 30th anniversary of Professor Anita Hill’s landmark testimony in the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court confirmation hearings. A seismic event in American culture, the 1991 hearings brought sexual harassment into the public conversation, and raised issues around race and gender that are as relevant today as 30 years ago.
Because of Anita reexamines this story to see how far we’ve come—and, in some cases, haven’t. Co-hosted by Dr. Salamishah Tillet, cultural critic at The New York Times, and Cindi Leive, journalist and co-founder of The Meteor, the four-part podcast series digs into the hearings’ lasting ripple effects…on people, on politics, and on our fundamental right to live in safety.
Produced by The Meteor and Pineapple Street Studios, Because of Anita features powerful conversations with guests including Professor Hill as well as women who played key roles at the time, like journalist Jane Mayer, lawyer and Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw, and scholar Dr. Barbara Ransby; women who felt the ripple effect of Hill’s experience, including Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, producer Drew Dixon, and actor Kerry Washington; and leaders in the work on these issues today, like legal advocate Fatima Goss Graves, journalist Irin Carmon, and ‘me too.’ founder Tarana Burke.
