The Meteor is a feminist media and production company founded by a collective of journalists and activists. Our recent work includes a weekly news podcast (UNDISTRACTED with Brittany Packnett Cunningham), a feminist summit of visionary leaders, and two Audible specials centering Black women, among other projects.

We are looking for a skilled and mission-driven Social Media Director who will lead strategy and execution for The Meteor’s social media channels.

This is a job for you if you have a proven ability to partner with editorial leadership to set social media strategy, work at a high-level both independently and collaboratively, excellent social media and organizational skills, and a commitment to and deep understanding of gender and racial equity.

Your Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Design an overall social strategy for The Meteor on Instagram (currently our primary outlet), Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok—working in collaboration with the rest of the leadership team
  • Partner with the editor in chief to ensure high-quality journalism and on-brand voice in social content, writing and editing where necessary and optimizing posts for specific platforms
  • Create a social editorial calendar, including developing content ideas, partnerships, and new projects
  • Manage and mentor internal and external contributors, including freelance social media editors, writers, designers, and agencies
  • Interact with audience on social platforms, from responding to and moderating comments to facilitating IG Lives
  • Track metrics to make data-based decisions and recommendations, including via paid social marketing, growing audience and hitting KPIs
  • Develop and maintain relationships with platform publishing partner teams
  • Ensure accessibility of posts via SRT captioning, alt text on images, and other best practices
  • Create and/or supervise creation of toolkits for key stakeholders

Your Qualifications

We are looking for an individual who has:

  • Deep interest in and commitment to advancing gender equity, especially through journalism and art
  • 5+ years experience in a leadership role successfully directing social media content and strategy
  • The ability to work with cross-functional teams, both as a leader and collaborator as needed, and also work independently with a high degree of initiative
  • The agility to work on multiple projects simultaneously, create priorities and timelines, and meet deadlines, all with an eye for detail
  • The creativity to maximize resources and devise solutions
  • The flexibility to react to news and incorporate fast feedback
  • Excellent grasp of voice and tone; superior story judgment
  • The passion to help us build our social media presence from the ground level

Even better if you also:

  • Have managed direct reports
  • Have experience working in editorial or newsroom environments and growing a team
  • Understand rights and clearances and sourcing/clearing UGC
  • Enjoy staying up-to-date on the social media landscape and evolving best practices


This is a full-time role.


Compensation for this position will be commensurate with experience.
