The Meteor is a feminist media and production company founded by a collective of journalists and activists. Our recent work includes a weekly news podcast (UNDISTRACTED with Brittany Packnett Cunningham), a feminist summit of visionary leaders, a podcast about the legacy of Professor Anita Hill’s testimony, and two Audible specials centering Black women, among other projects.
We are looking for a skilled and mission-driven Deputy Social Editor who will lead strategy and execution for The Meteor’s social media channels.
This is a job for you if you have a proven ability to partner with editorial and audience leadership to set social media strategy; work at a high-level both independently and collaboratively; demonstrate excellent social media, organizational, and content creation skills; and have a commitment to and deep understanding of gender and racial equity.
Your Key Areas of Responsibility
- Create and execute an overall social strategy for The Meteor on Instagram (currently our primary outlet), Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok. This includes producing and executing content with help from internal and external contributors.
- Partner with the Director of Audience Development to ensure high-quality journalism and on-brand voice in social content, along with creating promotion campaigns tailored to our major projects.
- Create a social editorial calendar. This includes developing content ideas, seeking partnerships, and proposing new projects.
- Manage and mentor internal and external contributors, including freelance social media editors.
- Interact with our audience on our social platforms, from responding to and moderating comments to hosting IG Lives.
- Track metrics and use them to make data-based decisions and recommendations.
- Develop and maintain relationships with platform publishing partner teams.
- Ensure accessibility of posts via SRT captioning, alt text on images, and other best practices.
- Create and/or supervise creation of social toolkits for key stakeholders.
Your Qualifications
We are looking for an individual who has:
- A deep interest in and commitment to advancing gender equity, especially through journalism and art
- 5+ years experience creating social media content and strategy for a media brand
- The ability to work with cross-functional teams, both as a leader and collaborator as needed, and to also work independently with a high degree of initiative
- The agility to work on multiple projects simultaneously, identify priorities, and map out timelines, all with an eye for detail
- The creativity to maximize resources and devise solutions
- The flexibility to react to news and incorporate fast feedback
- Excellent grasp of voice and tone; superior news judgment
Even better if you also:
- Have managed direct reports
- Have experience with paid social marketing
- Understand image use rights and clearances, along with best practices for sourcing and clearing UGC
- Enjoy staying up-to-date on the social media landscape and evolving best practices

Compensation for this position will be commensurate with experience.
