The Meteor is a feminist media and production company founded by a collective of journalists and activists. We produce a newsletter, podcasts, live events, partnerships, and of course, social media—which is where you come in.

We are looking for a skilled and mission-driven Social Media Editor who will lead execution and engagement for The Meteor’s social media channels.

This is a job for you if you have a proven ability to partner with editorial and audience leadership to set social media strategy; to engage audiences; work at a high level both independently and collaboratively; demonstrate excellent social media, organizational, and content creation skills; and have a commitment to and deep understanding of gender and racial equity.

Your Key Areas of Responsibility

    • Execute an overall social strategy for The Meteor on Instagram (currently our primary outlet), TikTok, Twitter, Threads, Facebook, LinkedIn. 
    • Create content for social feeds: Daily content production including original reporting;  packaging content from our newsletters and projects; editorial decision-making; and photo research and design.
    • Create and execute social-media strategy for our live events, podcasts and other major initiatives, and produce engaging social content for them. This includes creating and/or supervising the creation of social toolkits for key stakeholders.
    • Create and maintain social editorial calendar. This includes developing content ideas and proposing new projects.
    • Help manage and mentor internal and external contributors, including freelance social media editors. Hire as needed (in collaboration with editorial director). 
    • Partner with other social brands, building relationships and coordinating collaborations and shared content. 
    • Engage and interact with our audience on our social platforms, from responding to and moderating comments to hosting IG Lives.
    • Ensure accessibility of posts via SRT captioning, alt text on images, and other best practices.
    • Track metrics and use them to make data-based decisions and recommendations.

Your Qualifications

We are looking for an individual who has:

  • 5+ years experience creating social media content and strategy for a media brand
  • The ability to work with cross-functional teams, both as a leader and collaborator as needed, and to also work independently with a high degree of initiative
  • The agility to work on multiple projects simultaneously, identify priorities, and map out timelines, all with an eye for detail
  • The creativity to maximize resources and devise solutions
  • The flexibility to react to news and incorporate fast feedback
  • Experience staying up-to-date on the social media landscape and evolving best practices
  • Excellent grasp of voice and tone; superior news judgment
  • A deep interest in and commitment to advancing gender equity, especially through journalism and art

Even better if you also:

  • Have video editing experience 
  • Have managed direct reports
  • Have experience with paid social marketing
  • Understand image use rights and clearances, along with best practices for sourcing and clearing UGC

Time

This is a full-time role.

Compensation

Compensation for this position will be commensurate with experience.

Location

We are based in New York, but currently working remotely, and encourage all qualified applicants to apply. Some travel for events and offsites may be necessary.
